NaNoWriMo 2015

Here I am, sitting at my desk, waiting for the trick or treat crowds to arrive. We’re giving out glow-in-the-dark bracelets this year in hopes of keeping the kids out there visible to traffic. The day’s been cool and it’s finally getting dark outside. Two cats are pestering me simply by curling up on my desk: one under my halogen lamp and the other on my steno shelf. They want to be fed, but that doesn’t happen until the dog…

Camp NaNoWriMo has begun!

Camp NaNoWriMo has begun!

For me, anyway. I find the July session a lot less stressful than April’s; there’s not as much going on, though my husband works long hours as his co-workers take their vacations. My word count goal is 30K, which averages out to 968 words a day. Very attainable, I think. My main project is a sequel to The White Winds, one I’ve been chewing on for some time. Sneaking in some editing on completed or in-progress projects and adding to…

Yes, a new theme.

Yes, a new theme.

I’m trying out this new theme as it seems 2014 (even with the added child theme) is used a LOT around the Web. There’s a lot I like about this one: it’s already optimized for various devices, the menus and widgets are hidden until they’re needed, and the custom header has that sort of muted overlay. On the other hand, I don’t like the fact that all the headers seem to be uppercase, despite my specifying “Capitalized” on the theme…

Thanks to the shortcut…

Thanks to the shortcut…

I have all the previously formatted stories up in draft form. I have no idea how long it’s going to take me to edit all those chapters. Unfortunately, Overtures and Moonstrike! aren’t formatted at all so it’s going to take a bit for me to take care of them. I’m thinking that viewing source is probably my best way to go in this situation. I still hate that fanfiction.net has removed their HTML coding tool…

Well, the shortcut still has a few bugs in it…

Well, the shortcut still has a few bugs in it…

At least, I think it might. Someone was trying to access chapter 12 of The White Winds and couldn’t. Kept coming up with “unknown page”. Doing that too many times throttled their IP, too. Not sure just why, but chapter 11 and 12 had rendered the HTML markup for the <> symbols in the posted page instead of the symbols themselves. I’ve gone in and tweaked those two chapters and tested the links to make sure they’re functioning properly. I’ll…

Found a shortcut!

Found a shortcut!

With the HTML function down at fanfiction.net, I’ve had to find a different way to upload and edit my chapters. Up until now, I would load my HTML to An Archive of Our Own, edit it there, and then replace the original copy in my .txt file with the edits. This worked fine, until suddenly there was no more shortcut at fanfiction.net.

Plot bunnies ahoy!

Plot bunnies ahoy!

I usually keep a note book or a pad of paper by my bed, along with a pen or two. As many other authors probably do, I find I get the most interesting ideas just as I’m settling in to bed and the writing materials allow me to jot the ideas down before I lose them. (If I don’t write them down, I most certainly will lose them by the time I get up!)  Of course, whether or not I…

One step back

One step back

Well, not me taking one step back but fanfiction.net. They added new formatting tools to the user profiles and forum posting windows–including a “source code” button, but removed that one function from the actual document manager. (On the doc manager it was labeled “HTML”.) Do they really think we’re going to want the HTML versions of our forum posts? What were we going to do, post them at live journal? At WordPress? Facebook? Twitter? I can see the possibilities for…

Who am I blocking on this site?

Who am I blocking on this site?

Anyone who tries to log in as an administrator gets automatically blocked, which I then make permanent ASAP. Currently, this includes a crap ton of Italian IPs from static.albacom.net and fastwebnet.it hosting. US would-be hackers mostly come from biz.bhn.net. I block all traffic from China, and most coming from Russia and Eastern Europe. If you’re throttled, you’ll likely be permanently banned. Basically, if you make a nuisance of yourself, you’re banned. Whether or not the ban is permanent is decided…

Yes, I am a winner! Is the story finished? Do I ever finish a story during NaNo? Nope. Never. Not this time either. However, should I finish writing, editing, revising, and betareading this one, it’ll show up here at Tikatu’s Corner first. It’s a Thunderbirds fanfic entitled: Guardian Angels, Inc.
