A little obstacle…
Someone (Willow) decided I shouldn’t write on my new NaNoWriMo novel tonight. I was originally going to do a series of short stories, one for each day, but I’m already behind word count-wise. Willow is not helping.

I try to keep this blog tilted toward writing and not personal things, even though it started out as personal way back when. But… things have been hard for about a month and a half now and I just have to share it somewhere. First off, my mom lost her battle with Alzheimer’s and end-stage renal failure on September 16th. She died at my sister’s house, attended by hospice nurses, and with my dad, her husband of just 60 years,…
For the past few weeks, perhaps even months, this site has been pretty much inaccessible. I have no idea what caused it in the first place but I was getting errors in my Jetpack plug-in after a WordPress update. It was driving me nuts! I poked Jetpack. I poked my webhost. I was like a human-sized porcupine to those brave folks. I deactivated all my plug-ins. I removed my browser extensions. Finally, just tonight, I figured it out, and with…
You’d think that, in this time of shelter-in-place orders, I’d be writing up a storm, editing my work, finishing my works-in-progress. You’d be wrong. I’ve been sewing–making masks and finishing a very old quilt project. I’ve been playing video games. Doing chores. Gardening. Worrying about my parents. Chauffeuring the essential workers in my family. I’ve been ordering groceries as my kids won’t let me shop. I finally broke quarantine the other day, after the hair salons opened. But I haven’t…
Among Thunderbirds fans, both in the UK and worldwide, September 30th is “Thunderbirds Day”. It commemorates the first airing of “Trapped in the Sky” back in 1965. For many fanfiction writers, October is “Whumptober”, where the entire month is dedicated to stories whumping on (or beating up) a fandom’s main characters. I wasn’t thinking of Whumptober when I wrote the one-shot, but it may have had some small influence. I just thought about why a day might have been named…
I just realize that the NaNoWriMo Word Count Widget no longer exists! Because, if it did, it would tell you that I reached the goal of 50K! Woo hoo! It was a rough last week and a half, trying to catch up when I let things slide so badly. On the 19th, I wrote over 5K, which gave me a good boost, with another 4K the next day. I didn’t make it to too many write-ins (a perk of not…
But after writing pretty much all day, I’m closer to catching up. At the end of the day, I’ve written 5K. Still need to write more and, frankly, a lot of what I’m writing now will be cut later. The book should ideally span a married couple’s lifetime together but I don’t think it can. It’s probably easier to do this in scenes, though, than any of my fantasy novels have ever been. I did do a little research and…
It’s obvious from the widget on the homepage but I’m averaging about 1K words per day. Being home is part of the problem, I know. I look around and see how much housework needs to be done. Another part is my inner editor. She just won’t let me write without making corrections. The only time I can put her in a box is when I’m at a write-in and when she’s in the box, my typing is horrible! Still, the…
I’m wearing these “recovery gloves” (seriously, that’s what the manufacturer calls them) because my fingers and knuckles are screaming for relief. Not only am I typing my NaNo novel up, but I just finished a 6-foot long knitted scarf I made for a Christmas gift. (My first ever! Go me!) I expect to have a lot more pain as November rolls by because the people I love are getting mostly handmade crafts for Christmas. I also expect I’ll be taking…
I have no idea who he is or what year this was taken. His picture showed up on my Twitter feed today as a writing prompt. The little bit I wrote sort of blew up into a bigger idea and I now have my NaNoWriMo novel for 2019. It’s–get this–a Western romance! Never wrote one before and I’m sure I’ll use trope after trope as I go. It’s a big change from my normal superhero/fantasy/fanfic, that’s for sure! The dude…
